The suspect, a male, boarded the bus in the 2400-block of North Pulaski Road and, in a terrifying display of aggression, demanded the bus not stop. The driver, a 57-year-old woman, bravely continued her route, triggering a silent alarm that alerted authorities. Her quick thinking and the support of a bus supervisor led to her escape at the 900-block of North Clark Street on the Near North Side.
The suspect was swiftly apprehended in the 100-block of East Chestnut Street in the Gold Coast, just before 3:20 a.m. The incident, thankfully, resulted in no reported injuries.
This incident comes on the heels of a significant decrease in serious crime across the CTA system, as reported by Acting President Nora Leerhsen. Since March, there has been a 47% drop in serious crime, with buses registering a remarkable 64% reduction. The Red Line, in particular, has seen a 70% decrease in crime from Roosevelt to 95th Street.
Leerhsen attributes this success to a strategic deployment of law enforcement resources, including a 75% increase in CPD hours since December, especially during evening and overnight hours. However, the CTA acknowledges that violent crimes on the system remain a pressing concern. Between April of last year and this year, 779 violent crimes were committed, underscoring the ongoing challenges.
